The Technical Training Program

The Soccer Skillology Technical Training Program is a skill development system based on the principles of good athletic movement patterns. Balance, coordination, and timing are essential to the proper execution of all soccer skills from the most basic to the most complex.

  • The jump shot in basketball
  • The slap shot in hockey
  • A golf swing
  • Ground stokes in tennis
  • A baseball swing
  • Even skipping down the street
…These are all movement patterns, and they are trainable.

In soccer we have:

  • Passing with the inside of the foot
  • Shooting with the laces
  • Chipping the ball
  • Dribbling moves
  • Curling a pass with the outside of the foot
  • Side volleys
  • Slide tackling
  • Diving saves for a goalkeeper
….ALL TRAINABLE MOVEMENT PATTERNS!

So Problem #1 is a misunderstanding of skill.

Problem #2 then is the problem of access.  That is, access to the best information and access to a training ground.

Every professional player I know can tell you where their “wall” is.  That is the place they went to train by themselves to pass the ball against a wall.

From the time I was very young, I used to ride my bike to the school about 1 mile from my house and strike balls against the wall every day.  That was fun for me.  I enjoyed the training and I really enjoyed the results that I began to see on the field.

Unfortunately, it is no longer a world where parents can feel comfortable allowing their children to go off all day without supervision.  More than simply accessible, a proper learning environment must also be safe.

The Soccer Skillology Technical Training Program solves this problem by demonstrating how these skills can be learned and practiced right at home in your own back yard.  You will see how you can turn your yard, your driveway, and your chimney into your very own training facility (…without destroying your house 🙂 )

If someone tells you that they can make you a player with a few tips….you should turn and run away.
That’s not what this is.
There is great information here, but make no mistake, you have to do the work to learn and improve!

A person could give perfect instructions to an infant, but they’re not going to be able to stand up and walk.
…..Until they learn to stand up and walk.

The child’s body has to learn. It takes time for a baby to develop their sense of balance, coordination, and the timing of their strides. They have to try and they have to fail. Failure (falling) gives immediate feedback. This is an essential part of the process of discovery.  When the child falls we make a funny face that shows them its OK — that they’re OK, and then they’re right back at it. You can’t stop them if you try.

But as the child grows and socializes they become more self-aware. The internal drive to explore movement can go quiet in a lot of young people. When a child becomes too self-conscious their sense of adventure can be replaced by self-doubt. They learn a fear of looking awkward when learning new things and remain in their comfort zone of a very limited variety of movements.  For example, most people can skip comfortably, but a lot fewer can dance comfortably.
This can have broad implications from a lack of progress in soccer skill development to the seeds of childhood obesity.  Children begin their lives with a love of movement and an inherent desire to acquire skill.  Fear can bring a halt to the learning process.

At the first signs of this happening we need to provide external encouragement as a supplement.  The demonstrations and explanations in this program are meant to be part of that supplement.  This program is loaded with models of success.  —  One skill after another.

Success is an excellent motivator.  It provides real, organic, internal-inspiration.
Players who use this program will see:

Not just that “It can be done.”
But “It can be done by anyone and that includes me!”

You’ll get:

  • The steps to learning the critical points of performing each skill in logical order
  • The process for understanding (making sense of) those steps
  • The common errors to watch for
  • And how to avoid those errors
This skill development system addresses some of the very common misconceptions players have in executing the various skills of the game.  There is a large degree of commonality among flaws in technique because players learn the game in the same basic ways.  In this program, players will be introduced to some new ways of thinking about skill.

Here you will learn the movements associated with these soccer skills and with practice you will become more fluid as your body gets a feel for the balance, coordination, and timing.

Think of the truly great players. It’s as if they have cracked the skill code.
This program is your key to decoding the skills of the game.
It’s not a secret at all, it’s right there.  And once your body has learned these movement patterns that we commonly call “technique” you’ll be amazed at how easy and natural these skills feel.  Practice makes permanent.  We’re on a mission to help you form the habits of perfect technique.

This level where skills feel automatic takes a long, long time to achieve.
The instruction you will receive in this program can dramatically accelerate the learning process in terms of grasping the concepts of these movements. Your body then learns these movements through dedicated practice.

As you move toward this level of mastery of the skills of the game, you will gain understanding and insight into the intelligent and effective implementation of these skills in competitive situations.  You will develop what we call “Game Sense” by putting these skills to use in your “Soccer Laboratory”.

That is:

  • Pick up games
  • Your team training sessions
  • And competitive games
Now this is not meant to be an “AMAZE YOUR FRIENDS! BAFFLE YOUR ENEMIES!” kind of thing.

Skill for it’s own sake is showboating.  And while we play any game for enjoyment, to be successful at a highly competitive level requires that you ultimately learn to play with maturity in your decision-making.  It takes great self-discipline to develop your skills to the point of mastery, then put your skills at the service of the team.  This is the level of the world’s greatest players.  They make skill look effortless, as if the ball was a part of their body.  They control the ball so deliberately and process game situations so rapidly it’s as if they can see 10 seconds into the future.  Players at this level don’t just see things before they happen, they create the game as they want it to happen.

First:  Body Control – Then:  Ball Control – Then:  Game Control

Like sculpture, poetry, music, and any other art form, soccer then becomes a vehicle for the player’s self-expression.

Trust me…it takes many years of great effort to make skill look and feel effortless. But those years can be full of great fun learning and playing the world’s greatest game.

Whether you dream of playing professionally or simply want to have more fun playing with your friends, the path of learning is the same.  You have to enjoy your training.  I enjoy playing and coaching soccer more than anything else I have ever done.  This has been true my whole life.  I am very proud to share this program with you.  I only wish I had learned these things sooner.  The skills and ideas presented here have helped a lot of players find tremendous enjoyment and success from their soccer experience and I know it can do the same for you.

Good luck and enjoy your training.
